We, hubby and myself, have just returned from the Ancient Mysteries cruise onboard the Costa Serena sailing from Venice, 3rd-9th August '08. We have had a lovely cruise. We have cruised 3 times before on other smaller ships and wondered what this would be like as the reviews seemed so mixed, but we need not have worried. We were on deck 1,about 1/2 way down, in an ocean view cabin. It had plenty of room for the two of us, a comfortable queen size bed,a sofa, coffee table, easy chair 2 double wardrobes shelves aplenty,sat.t.v., a large window and a cabin steward who was lovely. The ship is a third of a mile long so yes a bit of walking but there are lifts aplenty and fun glass lifts in the atrium. The food was really nice and we found the choice of restaurants more than satisfying. There are coffee bars and cafe style places to eat and drink in as well and room service was very prompt and efficient. There are 2 formal nights and casual dress nights in between these and all a lot of fun in their own right. The hair and beauty salon is wonderful and the girls there so nice, I booked in 2 wash & blow-drys for the formal nights as soon as we boarded as i know how busy they get, and had wonderful hairdos which lasted until i chose to have them redone. The shopping was good too, designer bags, perfumes, makeup, belts clothes souveniers etc. Discos and piano lounges, a library, card room, or just quiet places to sit and enoy a coffee and watch the world go by. A decent casino, the theatre was huge and while we have watched better shows, they were still watchable and all good fun. Yes it is an expensive ship, the excursions seemed pricey, but excursions are at the best of times and there is always the option to use a ship excursion for say the Istanbul trip to ensure you get back to the boat on time to sail, as the traffic is bonkers in Istanbul, and use Taxis for the others or maybe just go walkabout yourself taking a map and just don't stray too far, be sensible and be aware of sailing times allowing plenty of time to return to the boat, plenty of people do this all the time. We did the Istanbul Grand Bizzarr ship trip in the morning, back to the ship for lunch and then went for a walkabout ourselves in the afternoon which was such good fun as the Turkish people are so lovely and more than willing to chat about themselves and their lovely country. On our last day we went on the Venice Gondolier trip which will stay with us forever. I loved every single minute of it-amazing. The Doges Palace is jaw dropping. Each morning we would get a couple of the cakes from the lido/pool breakfast deck, the ship has it's own bakery, and 2 bottles of water from our trip waiting lounge, to have for our excursion mid-morning snack. We've always done this, it helps pennies wise as tourist-spot cafes can be very expensive. There was so much to do and see both onboard the ship and onshore or not, the choice is always yours. Some people stay on the boat all the time, some opt to visit the local beach each time the ship docks or vary it with a tour in the morning and a walkabout in the afternoon with a nap before dinner onboard. It is a very glitzy ship and quite ornate, immaculately kept and feels spacious and roomy. It's simply blissful whatever you choose to do, relaxing and easygoing with a really nice helpful ships crew. We had no problems sleeping our cabin was quiet, our dinner companions were lovely, the food lovely. We felt well looked after and have no hesitation in recommending the Serena.
Quality of Food5
We had breakfast on the Lido and breakfast buffet area. Sometaimes a cooked bacon and eggs b'fast somtimes cereal/yoghurt/fruit with tea, juice or coffee.
Entertainment2
The shows were overall good, we have watched better on other ships, but they were watchable. The magic shows were very good. Not "West End" standard as some we have seen but fun and entertaining nevertheless.
Shore Excursions4
Loved them all-Bari was enchanting and ancient, all narrow atmospheric streets with cute shops as was Dubrovnik, Ephesus is amazing and very, very hot-take a brolly for shade and a fan you will need and use them constantly,Venice will stay with me forever,Istanbul is pure magic-loved it.
Staff5
The enquiries staff-they have so much to deal with and sort out for every one and in so many different languages as well-amazing staff!
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities4
Plenty to do or not as you choose.
Cabins4
It was bigger than we expected and the bed was wonderfully comfortable.

Hi Just read your review on the costa serena cruise from venice, we have booked this cruise for july 09. It sounds like you had a good time, which is quite reassuring, as you never know when you book these cruises what to really expect, there are mixed reviews about this cruise so I will stick with your comments ha! We have been on a cruise with island star which was fab so hope to feel the same about this one.

I'm sure that you will have a lovely time. As I said before we have cruised before but with our 3 offspring, all grown up now & doing thier own thing hols wise, so for all sorts of reasons we wondered how this cruise would be. We had visited a couple of the stop-off places before but you do spot things anew i think on return visits plus it's good to revisit memorable places anyway. We did find the excursions pricey but i think if you plan/budget well before you travel etc it's managable. Our booking was through Virgin & they were very helpful re itinerary queries. If you check out the Serena on this site you will be able to view the ships interior and take a peek at other cruisers holiday pics. I know that the reviews are somewhat mixed but i think they mostly are anyway for holidays-it's a case of What You Make Of It personally I think. We are fairly easy-going but we do like nice food and bedrooms/cabins and this was so. We found plenty of choice re meals in the cafe type eaterie places, there is a lido buffet and we kept on finding more buffet type food bars as well as seated restaurants! It is largely Italian style food on offer from the buffets re b'fast, lunches or casual dinner meals but there always other options available and as we love Italian food it was fine for us anyway-like being on holiday in Italy & taking it with you as you cruise around. If we had any queries re anything not just what is that please re the food, we were answered promptly and with a smile. Yes there were youngsters onboard but only as you would expect to find on holiday anyway, certainly no rowdiness etc. Our cabin was immaculate and quiet to sleep in. I would happily rebook with them and i know that our 18,22 & 24 year olds would love it too. It is a different experience on the Serena as it's a huge Floating Resort Ship but the cruise basics are the same. Some of the comments/reviews were so negative re this Ship but really the only gripe we had was we did have to wait a while to board in the first instance, but it's a large Ship with a lot of people all boarding, so what would you expect? We were seated while waiting with a snack bar similar to a samll airport lounge idea i quess. But everything else was fine. Most enjoyable. Do try out the last day Venice/gondola trip, can't recall the price but it was good value as the gondola ride is included, it's "walk through" trip but you do get to see The Dodges Palace have lunch in the square, not included in the trip price don't sit at the suares tables it's silly price wise-get a hot/cold snack from one of the many snack/shop places around the sqares edge with a drink to go and wander for a while then walk past all the Chanel,Prada etc shops and enjoy the atmosphere. We chose to wander about on our own for a while and got a river taxi back to the Serena ready to disembark sailing along the bit where Daniel Craig was in Casino Royale. Wonderful simply wonderful. Do you know this has rewhetted my appetite for Serena-might find you nexy year onboard!! All the best .
