Cabin 9026 Deck 9. This was our first Costa cruise and the tone was set upon our arrival on board when we were simply pointed in the direction of the lift (your cabin's that way!). Cabin satisfactory & clean (good wardrobe space), cabin steward Carlos excellent. However waste system went on the blink and saturated our cabin (strange feeling putting your feet out of bed during a storm in the dark and having wet feet), no visit or interest shown by customer service (steward did his best) but the smell for the remainder of the cruise was terrible (had to put aftershave on our pillows to sleep), carpet needs to be thrown out! Hair dryer in bathroom has label on which reads "Do not fix where it could fall into a sink, toilet or tub" - the furthest away of these three was the tub at approx 1.5 metres, length of flex on hair dryer approx 2 metres. Air conditioning throughout ship very good. No smoking in restaurants, theatre & one lounge, but smoking a big problem in all other areas. All restaurants (except Orion) are self service, food is to be eaten from large white plastic plates & drinks consumed from multi coloured thick plastic vessels (again except Orion). Food quality very mediocre (sometimes very poor) and repetitive (dinner ends with dessert not even coffee). Dress code is a joke (men take one jacket max). Service generally poor (can anyone tell me what the 15% service charge is for when you have to get your own drinks?). If you order a bottle of wine invariably it is opened by the drinks waiter and that's it (pour your own mate). Staff on the ship are very poorly trained (most do not have a clue) and many of officer status impolite. Announcements on board sometimes in 7 languages. No hand sanitizer anywhere on the ship (not even at boarding point), lost a couple from our table due to the bug (they were not alone). No picture ID on ships boarding card you have to carry a A4 size photocopy with you ashore. When travelling by taxi ashore do not negotiate a price, make sure you are on the meter (you will save a fortune). Evening entertainment on board we found very good (lost lead female singer and lead male dancer along the way believed to the bug). Laundry deal at end of cruise a good deal.
